A change of focus April 23, 2015Posted by rm42 in Life.
It has been a long time since I posted anything to this blog. When I started it, one of my main interests was Linux, both as a technology and as a phenomenon. Of course, I wasn’t the only one attracted to that topic. So I guess it is not surprising that some of my posts were quite popular.
For example, in 2009 I wrote a post entitled “Open Source Photo Processing Comes of Age“. It received almost 10,000 views in just a few weeks. In 2010, the post entitled “OpenOffice.org and the Gimp on the N900” got about 20,000 hits. Then, in 2011 I wrote “Python for Newbies” (parts 1 and 2). As of today, it has received 37,146 views. It makes me happy to have shared back a little in return for what the open source community has given me.
However, as I mentioned before, this blog has laid dormant for a while. I guess, I was just not excited enough about anything related to Linux or to technology to write about it. The nice thing about having an independent free blog is that one doesn’t have to write anything if one doesn’t feel like it. At one time, someone offered to pay me for writing technology related articles for a certain website. I wrote one article and I had to quit. The pressure of having to write “something” at set periods of time made me feel like I was trapped in a cold prison cell with a keyboard and a monitor chained to my ankle. No thank you. I just couldn’t do it.
Some one told me a while back that creativity comes in cycles. There is a period of absorption, a period of consumption, and a period of expression. During the period of absorption, one has to be aware of the world around us. We have to observe, study, question, and analyse something. The period of consumption is when we meditate, reflect, and develop an understanding about that something. And finally, the period of expression is when we make public what we have assimilated. This expression of course can be through words, drawings, music, etc.
Well, I guess I am at a point again in which I want to exteriorize some of the things I have been pondering about. I have no idea when, or how often I will be posting to this blog, but my intention is to write a bit more frequently than I have been. Be forewarned, you may not like what I am going to write about. Not only will you not find some of the things I am thinking of writing about interesting, but I think some of you may actually be irritated by them. Of course, my intention is not going to be to irritate you. But, I can foresee a little “cognitive dissonance” discomfort ensuing in some of you as a result of my writing. We’ll see. In the mean time, please accept my thanks for having visited this ad-free blog and my best wished to you.
