I believe programs from the older Maemo devices need to be ported to the N900. From what I understand there is a lot of activity on that front.

I think, the Nokia N900 will be the right thing. I don't want to have an "always online" device like the iphone or the pre. Mobile connection, ok, if I want it from time to time. But normaly I only need my offline reader and my passcodes and perhaps some dates and contacts. All this resides on my Palm E2. And this should be the same on my future device.

Does anyone now wether the older maemo programs (for os2008 e.g.) are running on the new N900, too? Or is a new version required?

iTunes is very much proprietary and closed, therefore it is unreasonable to expect it to run where Apple does not want it to run. As for being one of the "better" media stores available, I frankly do not know how it compares since I have never used it. By nature I avoid things that try to lock me in. But, I can tell you that I have used some very nice media players in Linux that satisfy my every need. The N900 will probably not be an exception in having great multimedia playback and a good shopping experience. And as for being able to transfer media files easily, can you transfer your media (and other files) back and forth between your iPhone and any computer in the world, regardless of operating system, and whether it has iTunes installed (or any any other application) or not? You will with the N900.

Out of Curiosity - and assuming Linux can run iTunes. Have you (or anyone else) tried running it on a N900. It is however you look at it one of the "better" music/video stores going around these days not to mention with the new file sharing capabilities you can easily move/transfer files something the Nokia software sucks at.

When I first installed Digikam, I was excited inspite of the huge number of dependencies (full disclosure, I use gnome and openbox).
Digikam worked fine on a small folder of files, but the moment I pointed it to my huge 2 terabyte archive, it choked, it burned, and then died a horrible death. Digikam has crashed and or stalled every single time I've tried to open it. I've installed it and reinstalled it several times and it is just unusable on my large archives. And I have a quad-core with 8 gig ram and a quadro fx 4500.
I'm sad that digikam turned out to be so unstable because I really thought it had hope and I wanted it to be good.
Maybe my experience would have been better with KDE, but at this time KDE is not an option I want to explore.

No bias and so objective. A very good review especially from that developer's view comparation and making me sure to buy the n900 once it comes to my country. Im a bit unsure to buy this at first, since a lot of negative arguments about this device, but after reading your review, I wont buy anything else but this powerful device.

thanks

Well, there is the option of assigning a different activity per desktop, which would give you that effect. I had a bit of trouble with it when I tried it a while back. I remember telling my self that next time I tried it I would start with only one activity. I think that when enabling that option it will create additional activities for you (one for each of your desktops) that you can customize latter as you wish.

Any way, to get to that option follow this steps:

- Zoom out (through the plasma icon)
- Click on the "Configure Plasma..." option in the floating options widget.
- Select the "Different activity for each desktop" option.
- Click Ok ;)

The best is:
- Workspace totally independent, and I don't find this kind of option on KDE :-(
