Hi ...

Nice post. I have the same machine, but I wiped out of the box the xp :=)). I dont need xp for my Jobs (shipping manager). I just installed gentoo and ubuntu on this kind of machine my graphic card is nVidia. Today in spare time I have been evaluating the distro, since the machine is powered by ubuntu 8.04, but I rather disappointed with ubuntu stability, there is mess-up on the gdm and I have no time to "tweak" since I have been very busy lately.

When the machine powered by gentoo, almost 9 months with-out problem, very stable, but I wiped gentoo due to wanna to give Hardy Heron try (I dont like dual boot). Im considering to install gentoo again, and gentoo released 2008.0 but version for gentoo is absurd.

My problem, I have not enough time to install gentoo, I donwloaded the latest portage and stage3. OpenSUSE is my another choice, as I aware lenovo choosed SLED for their pre-installed lenovo's laptops.

Your post inspiring me to wait couple days (till week end) to decide what distro will be soul-mate of my Lenovo T-61. Now I have to type "startx' everytime wanna to use the laptop and type 'sudo halt" to switching off.

thanks a lot

Hey rm42, nice tour of different distros, I enjoyed it.

I am currently running a T61 also (practically the same specs as you) and I love it, and I'm running Mint on it currently.. I like it a lot (it's my first distro), all works well.. well except for that darn ''Desktop effects could not be enabled'' which I'm still figuring out.

Talk to ya later

Hello that's a good review.

I'm a mandriva user myself and if you want more choice for your repositories

go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/?language=en

there you will be able to access all repository and it will even generate a script for you to install them.

The PLF repositories are quite interesting too for multimedia and peer to peer file sharing :)

Esteban,
Thanks for the comment. I will do a little follow up, but not as comprehensive as this one, I don't think. But, we'll see. ;)

Amazing Articles!! Thanks a lot for putting this comprehensive "guide" ("tour"?) together. I've been fooling around with some distros myself lately, but didn't go as comprehensively as you did. (Not even close)

I wonder if you would be willing to do a folowup of this post on how each of the distros you left on your Hard Drive behaves on different things like Wireless connectivity, battery life and so on.

Am I getting pushy? :)

petitbob,

I have been waiting for the final version of MEPIS to be out to try it. Once it is I will give it a try. Although, in view of recent announcements, I am a little concerned with the level of support that distro may get in the future.

Lutz,
You can remove any repositories that you may have added by going into "Install & Remove Software" > Options > Media Manager. Select the top entry on the list, then while pressing your shift key, select the last one on the list (to select them all). Once they are all selected, simply click on the Delete button. You can then add “Distribution sources” as Adam explained.

Hello rm42 , hello Adam,

thanks for the discussion!
I am very impressed by Mandriva as it seems to me the most usable Linux in its out of the box state.
I had exactly the same problems regarding the repository choices as described above and probably more (this is one thing which in general seems a lot more straightforwardly organized in PCLOS). For example, I still have not figured out how to "undo" my choice regarding update or general repository type.
